Let's talk ZZ Top?
|
Jimmy Hendrix reckoned Billy Gibbons was the next best guitarist.
Spinning fur guitars and two of the coolest mother fuckers I have ever seen on stage, plus Beard who doesn't have a beard
Legs is probably one of the best music videos ever
Your generous thoughts of this fine Texan band?

They come across like Yanks have a sense of irony and self-distance.
Not having any of it of course.

Been going for 45 (yes, fourty-five) years, and as good as Eliminator, Afterburner etc are, their best stuff is the early bluesier stuff, Rio Grande Mud, Tres Hombres, Fandango, Tejas and Deguello... pure class. Saw them live at Wembley around the Eliminator days, proper, good hard rockin' gig.

A friend of mine was in a bar in Houston having dinner at a table on her own. The place was busy and the waitress was having difficulty finding a table for three blokes.
My friend ushered them across and told them that they could join her at her table which they did. The waitress got a bit flustered and asked her if she knew who they were. Well, being a Brit, not really into rock music and newly arrived in Houston she said 'No why?'.
The waitress apologised to the members of ZZ TOP and said she'd find them their own table. They said they were fine sat there chatting to their new found Brit friend. She said they were good company but she never thought to get any autographs.
They're touring the US next year with Jeff Beck (2nd May in Houston).

Love the pinch harmonics they get. I believe Billy uses an old Mexican peso instead of a plastic pick.

I recently bought a box set of all 10 of their studio albums for about £20 on Amazon. So far I've got into the first 3 albums and just stating the next 3. Some good blues with a few cracking songs, such as Precious and Grace and La Grange.

He does, read an interview years where he said our 20p pieces made pretty good picks.
Favourite is Fandango! half a live album, half studio and both sides are great. The live half would be a bit of an eye-opener to anyone who has only heard the Eliminator on stuff. They can really rock.
